Members of Honour and Honorary Members

After Knights of the Röda Ulv are Members of Honour and Honorary Members is the highest award given by the student association.

In V&A’s by-laws (Norwegian) it is stated that the titles Member of Honour (hedersmedlem) and Honorary Member (æresmedlem) is awarded people who have been central and imprortant for the association, the students represented by the association, or the education these students recieve.

The nomination text should be a thorough account and explaination of what the candidate has done to deserve the title. Honorary Members do not need to fulfill the criteria of membership in the student association, whereas Members of Honour are, or have been, considered an active member. Members of the current Board cannot be nominated for Member of Honour.

New Members of Honour and Honorary Members are ordinarily announced at V&A’s annual Christmas party.

Nominations can be sent through through email to styret@volvox.no.

The history around these titles

The title of Honorary Member (æresmedlem) is a tradition reaching back to the year 2000, but these archives are unfortunately uncomplete. This is why the list on this site only covers appointed people as far back as 2013.

At the General Assembly of 2017 it was decided that the criteria for the titles shoud be changed. Previously, Honorary Members had to have been a member of the Board and a committee for at least a year, or two years in the Board. After the General Assembly, it was decided that Honorary Members should be decided based only on the nomination text, as the by-laws state today.

At the General Assembly of 2023, it was distinguished between Members of Honour and Honorary Members. The change had no practical significance other than that the titles now fit their respective definitions, where a Member of Honour is by definition a part of the student association as an active or inactive member, and an Honorary Member is a title pertaining to people outside the association who despite of this have contributed greatly.

There has been appointed a total of 88 Members of Honour of Volvox & Alkymisten since 2013.
